Using a unique, rapid approach for developing drugs to overcome drug resistance, DesignMedix developed a series of novel drug candidates. DesignMedix has three projects in the pipeline, two antimalarial series and one to address bacteria that cause life-threatening diarrhea.
RCQ Anti-malaria drugs
DesignMedix's first objective is to provide a non-toxic cure for drug-resistant malaria that can be used for children and pregnant women. These are the most vulnerable patients, and there are few drugs available to them. The company has lead RCQ drug candidates in preclinical studies that are effective against multiple drug-resistant human malaria strains, orally available and effective in a mouse model of malaria. These drugs are amenable to low-cost manufacturing, which is important for their target markets.
Modified Acridone Anti-malaria Drugs
The second project is to develop a safe and potent drug with broad-spectrum activity against blood stage malaria that can be co-formulated with other antimalarials in a synergistic combination to prevent and treat malaria, thus supporting world-wide eradication of the disease. The Company has modified acridone derivative drug candidates that show excellent synergy with a number of other anti-malarial drugs. Another series of drug candidates have been shown to prevent liver-stage malaria in a mouse model. These drug candidates have strong disease preventive properties. Both candidates have good safety profiles and a currently being optimized for efficacy and drug properties. Low-cost manufacturing is possible with these drugs.
Anti-bacterial drugs
In a second application of DesignMedix, Inc. proprietary approach, the company has produced drug candidates active against a broad-spectrum of bacteria, with particular activity against MRSA.
